Tables (legacy + merge / split)
Use this page when you need to merge two tables into one bill, split a table between two or more guests, or look up how the legacy Tables screen works on the Retail POS till.
Goal
You need to move items between tables (merge) or split one table's bill across multiple payers (split) without losing what the kitchen already cooked.
Where this happens
- On the till (Restaurant POS App): Tables → Merge Tables (route
/merge-tables) and Tables → Split Table (route/split-table) are the live, supported flows. From the till drawer Tables (route/tables, screen All Open Tables) you can also open one table to view its items. - On the till (Retail POS App): the Tables screen is a legacy retail-table view kept for compatibility. The Retail POS App does not own table management today — restaurants do. Use the Restaurant POS App for tables.
The Retail POS App's Tables screen is older; it is kept so existing retail setups still work. New deployments should not turn it on.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the till with a role that has table permission.
- The table is open in the till (the order is on the table, not closed yet).
- You know which items go where, and you have the guests' agreement for any split.
Steps
1. Open the table on the till
On the till, open Tables and pick the table you need to work with. The table opens with its current items, modifiers, and any payments already attached.
2. Merge two or more tables
Use this when two tables are sat together (or a guest moved) and one bill covers both:
- Open Merge Tables from the till drawer (route
/merge-tables). - The screen shows the All Open Tables grid — select every table to merge (the checkbox is on each row).
- Type a New Table Name (pre-filled with the first selected table's name; confirm or edit).
- Pick the Waiter to assign.
- Tap Merge Tables (n) —
nis the number of selected tables. The button is disabled until at least two tables are selected.
3. Split a table
Use this when guests on one table want to pay separately. The split screen shows the original table on the left and the new (split) table on the right; you move items one-by-one or line-by-line:
- Open Split Table from the till drawer (route
/split-table). - The screen shows two side-by-side tables —
table1(original) on the left,table2(new) on the right. - Move items:
- One — move a single unit of the line across.
- Line — move every unit of the line across.
- Type the Table Name for the new table and tap Save.
- Each new table can be paid separately (cash, card, mobile money, room charge).
Note: the till's split mode is per-item / per-line only today — there is no built-in "split evenly by guest count" or "split by amount" mode. If you need an even or amount-based split, move the items manually until each side has the right total.
4. Close the table
When every bill is paid, close the table. The kitchen ticket clears and the till is ready for the next table.
Expected result
- Merged tables have one bill with all items, modifiers, and prep notes (named by the New Table Name you typed).
- Split tables produce one bill per payer, with items assigned to the right bill.
- The kitchen ticket reflects the final state of the table.
- All payments are recorded against the right bill.
Edge cases
- An item is on the source table but the kitchen has not cooked it yet. Move the item with the merge or split; the kitchen ticket updates to the new table.
- A modifier is attached to an item. The modifier follows the item — never split a modifier off its item.
- A guest leaves without paying. Follow your store's policy — usually the supervisor voids the items from the open table and records the loss. Do not close the table with an unpaid balance.
- The Merge Tables button is greyed out. You selected fewer than two tables — pick at least two.
- The legacy Retail POS Tables screen behaves differently. That is the older retail layout; new deployments should use the Restaurant POS App for tables.
Deprecated note (Retail POS — legacy Tables)
The Retail POS App's Tables screen is an older retail-table view, kept for stores that already have it on. New deployments should use the Restaurant POS App for table management. If your store has the Retail POS Tables screen on and you need to migrate, ask your franchise admin to switch the till to the Restaurant POS App.
