Cooking Instructions (modifier groups)
Use this page when a customer asks for a specific change to a dish at the till — "no onions", "well done", "extra spicy", or "swap the side". This page explains how to add the instruction on the till so it reaches the kitchen ticket.
Goal
You need to add a cooking instruction (also called a modifier) to a line on the till so the kitchen ticket tells the chef exactly how the customer wants the dish prepared.
Where this happens
- On the till (Restaurant POS App): open the dish on the POS screen, then pick the cooking instruction from the modifier list.
- In the back office (Core App): modifier groups are configured per stock item by supervisor or franchise admin.
Cooking Instructions are a Restaurant-specific feature. Retail stores do not see the modifier list — cooking modifiers apply to dishes, not packaged goods.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the Restaurant POS till.
- The dish has at least one modifier group configured (set up by your supervisor in the back office).
- You know which modifier the customer wants — or you can ask the customer to pick from the list.
Steps
1. Add the dish to the sale
On the POS screen, scan or search for the dish, and add it to the basket.
2. Open the modifier list
Tap the line in the basket. The Cooking Instruction screen opens at route /instruction (the view title shows the dish PLU). The screen shows the current modifier group (one group at a time — for example: Cooking preference, Side, Sauce, Allergens).
3. Pick the modifier
- Tap the modifier in the list that matches the instruction.
- Some modifiers add a charge — the screen shows the extra amount on the line.
- The next group opens automatically (the wizard moves you through every group the supervisor has configured).
- Use the Add Custom Instruction modal (top-right close button on the instruction list) to type a free-text instruction when no listed modifier matches.
The dish line in the basket now shows the modifier text and any price change.
4. Save and send to the kitchen
When the whole sale is ready, complete the payment. The kitchen ticket prints with the modifier text next to the dish so the chef knows how to prepare it.
Expected result
- The kitchen ticket shows the dish and the modifier text ("well done", "no onions", "extra spicy").
- The till line shows any extra charge from a paid modifier.
- The customer sees the same modifier text on their receipt.
Edge cases
- A modifier the customer wants is not on the list. Use the Add Custom Instruction modal to type a free-text instruction, or ask your supervisor — modifier groups are configured in the back office and the Wiki cannot list every variant.
- The modifier charge does not show on the line. Pick the modifier again; if it still does not show the charge, the modifier may be configured as no charge by your supervisor.
- The customer changes their mind after the order is sent. Open the line and edit the modifier before completing payment; once the kitchen ticket is printed, ask the kitchen to make the change (the till cannot edit a printed ticket).
- The dish has no modifier group. The dish was added to the menu without modifiers; ask your supervisor if the dish should have modifiers.
